This piece was one of the most challenging carvings I have ever done. Each day I would hold the glove on my left hand and carve a block of wood mounted on my power arm. It is all one piece. A challenge was to figure out where I wanted the bird to look. So I carved the bird and turned the head as if it was looking into the face of the falconer.
Several years ago, our family vacationed at this particular home. I loved watching each day the birds running along the shoreline so one day I stood in the shallows while the waves crashed around me with a pencil and pad drawing the beach house from their perspective. When I got home, I created this house as a relief carving out of tupelo and carved this little sandpiper.
Along with Master Call Maker and Multi Royal/Grand Slam holder Charles Petrey, I have started carving the tops of these beautifully made turkey calls. The one above is a strutting Tom, carved, burned, and painted with oils as well as an eye inserted.
Above is a carved, burned, and painted Strutting Tom on a maple top turkey call made by Charles Petrey.
This is a Turkey Tail feather on a Walnut top call made by Charles Petrey. Each of these calls are available for purchase. They are not mass produced and they sound as great as they look. Charles hand tunes each one and I get it and carve in the features that you see above. If you are interested, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
